Happy Mother’s Day – Mom!

This is my Momma, isn’t she beautiful?! This is one of my favourite photos of my parents. My mom became a mom for the first time in the spring of 1963 with my older sister Tam and then again 11 months later with my sister Kim. It wasn’t until 9 years later did she have me – my baby sister La La arrived 21 months after me.

As a Mom myself, my favourite Scripture verse is Proverbs 31:28, “Her children rise up and call her blessed…” It is one that I pray over my children almost each and every day. I point my finger at them and say with confidence, “You WILL rise up and you WILL call your mother blessed!” They’re used to it now. It is a great prophetic verse and shown in many ways as having come to pass, not only in words but in actions. When your children obey, they are calling their mother blesses. When they make wise choices, they are calling their mother blessed. When they become responsible adults, they are calling their mother blessed.

How our children grow and become the respectful, well-behaved, good citizens we all want them to become, I believe is largely a result of the way their father treats their mother. Proverbs 31:28 goes on to say, “and her husband [joins in] boasts of and praises her…” and this is my favourite part, I’ll give you The Message’s version, her husband is known to say, “Many women have done wonderful things, but you’ve outclassed them all!”

My Dad did this well, or at least he learned to do this well. They did fight when they were first married – how can you not after meeting and marrying in only 8 weeks?! But then they seemed to rediscover each other. You should see how my Dad looks at my Mom!!! She mopes around when she’s here visiting and he’s not with her, even though it’s just for a few days. They are GA-GA over each other!! They celebrate 39 years this October. They are my heroes in marriage – actually in a lot of situations. They are an incredible team.

I have many incredible memories of my mom. One of my favourite times with her is probably from when I was in Grade 12. I had just switched to a new High School and was having a hard time with a particular English teacher. I had a spare on Monday mornings (A block) and so she would take me to The Pantry for breakfast. I loved Mondays. We would sit together, have coffee and eat and relax before I had to go to Mr B’s class. It made that semester bearable!
I always liked hanging out with my mom (& dad). We’d double-date, go shopping, go to the movies, eat together, vacation together – even as a teen and especially now! There was never a time that I didn’t want to hang out with them, I never hide or withdrew, even during my rebellious phase. She was always someone that I could count on.
My Mom was there at each one of my children’s birth and that was so incredible to me, to have her support when I was becoming a Mom. She is full of wisdom but also full of the Word. She doesn’t just answer me with her opinion but from God’s view on the situation. I love reading The Amplified because of her. 🙂
She is fun to go shopping with and to spend the day at the spa together. She is fun to take on holidays as she laughs and giggles as the waves of the Atlantic Ocean tosses her around. (That was a fun trip to Myrtle Beach, SC when I was a few months pregnant with my first child)
Thanks Mom for being my protector (trust me, you DON’T want to cross her – she’s a Momma bear when it comes to her kids!), mentor but my friend above all.
I love you Mom!
